As a Founding Sponsor of World Environment Day 2005 in San Francisco, ECA collaborated with the United Nations Environmental Programme and the City of San Francisco to sponsor, develop, and enrich events related to the Green Cities Declaration and the Urban Environmental Accords. ECA provided funding for the following:
World Environment Day Opening Ceremonies Children’s Flag Walk
More than 1,000 school children from the San Francisco Unified School District had a front row seat as mayors from the largest cities in the world paraded by during the opening ceremonies of this historic event. Holding flags donated by ECA and Earth Council Foundation – U.S., young people lined the walkway on San Francisco’s Civic Plaza as a dramatic reflection of global unity.
Harmony Green Cities Guide and Urban Accords Workshop
The ECA affiliate, Harmony Foundation of Canada, has published, Green Cities: a Guide for Sustainable Community Development. Green Cities is an official document of World Environment Day and The Urban Environmental Accords. It was written in collaboration with The Centre for Sustainable Community Development, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, and includes a foreword by Maurice Strong.
LINK TV and Living Dreams Films Video Documentation
LINK TV and Living Dreams Films collaborated to capture the essence of World Environment Day, documenting major events for this global celebration as well as numerous interviews with many of the global thought leaders in sustainability.
Muir Woods Walk and Celebration of 60th Anniversary of the Signing of the UN Charter
This event captured a spirit of contemplation and respect in a silent walk through the towering redwoods of Muir Woods to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom hosted with keynote speaker David Abram, author of The Spell of the Sensuous.
Sustainable Transportation – Former Vice President Al Gore
ECA, the World Resources Institute, and Roots of Peace co-sponsored a dinner to celebrate release of the institute’s Millennium Assessment Report and an address by Mr. Gore on sustainable transportation as part of World Environment Day 2005 programs.
