Through collaboration with United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), ECA served as the NGO Global Sponsor of United Nations World Environment Day in June 2005. World Environment Day (WED) is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The 2005 United Nations World Environment Day was celebrated in San Francisco, USA, at the birthplace of the United Nations.
On May 30 and 31, 2006 in celebration of World Environment Day 2006, ECA Chairman Tommy Short and UNEP representative Mr. Hossein Fadaei of Geneva participated as presenters at the launching ceremony of Earth Council Italia in Naples, Italy.
This ceremony highlighted the commitment of the founders of Earth Council Italia: Giovanni Picone, Fabrizio Erbaggio, and Andrea Zanon, long time colleagues of Earth Council Alliance and leaders of the environmental movement in Italy and the Mediterranean Region. Also in attendance were many government officials including the President of the Campania Region of Italy and the Mayor of the City of Naples, as well as environmental and economic experts and representatives of academia from throughout the Mediterranean Region. The conference revealed the continuity of commitment that the city of Naples, referred to commonly as “the centre of Europe and the Mediterranean”, has demonstrated toward issues of sustainable development and global cooperation.
With the occasion of the Earth Council Italia establishment, Naples has been presented as a candidate to host a future United Nations World Environment Day. In addition, through this conference, Earth Council- Italia has formerly been invited by UNEP to take part in an international committee of NGOs through the auspices of the United Nations.
