WORKSHOP IN BEDAIHE'S DONG SHAN COMMUNITY SPARKS INITIATIVE; EMCC EXPANDS TRAINING FOR EPB MANAGERS

Harmony is pleased to be working with education professionals
from Environmental Management College of China (EMCC) to
create practical results which benefit community members while
ensuring leadership training curriculum and methods are fully
adapted for China.

EMCC also is making impressive progress in developing training
with Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB) managers. Training
for Qinhuangdao EPB managers on sustainable community
development begins this spring.

EPB leaders have embraced the project enthusiastically.
Qinhuangdao Environment Protection Bureau (EPB) has
requested four training sessions for its managers instead of the
single training initially planned. EPB managers from other
communities in China also have expressed interest in the
training, providing an excellent opportunity to expand the
project’s reach to the national network of EPB officials.
Zhang Yongli, President of EMCC, and Geng Shigang, Vicepresident
of the College, have effectively laid the groundwork
for expanding the project into other communities in Hebei
Province. “This project is important to EMCC, and invaluable to
China’s communities,” said Geng.

Working with Harmony, the College is building support for
project expansion, as well as a national centre for leadership
training for a “harmonious and sustainable society”.

HARMONY AND NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER FOR MAYORS OF CHINA AGREE TO OCTOBER TRAINING

BEIJING- Harmony Foundation of Canada and the National Training Center for Mayors of China (NTCMC) will expand their collaboration for sustainable community development in China. During October 2008 the organizations again will train mayors on sustainable community development, building upon the
success of a pilot training held in October 2007 in which over 40 mayors
participated.

“The October 2007 training was very successful,” said Wang Zhongping,
NTCMC Director. “We are pleased to be a partner in this important project.”
The training of China’s mayors will lead to greater use of clean technologies and increased public participation in addressing city planning and management issues including air and water pollution and carbon reduction. The NTCMC-Harmony collaboration also is training education professionals at NTCMC to train mayors on sustainable community development on
an ongoing basis.

NTCMC’s enthusiasm is demonstrated by expansion of its staff for this project and for building a national centre for leadership training for a
“harmonious society”, its most ambitious collaboration ever with a foreign
organization.
